Helmut Freitag studied school music, history, church music, conducting, and more in Saarbrücken, Düsseldorf, and Geneva. After working as a music school director and church music director, he was appointed music director of the University of Saarland in 2002 and professor in 2007. He has been the main organist at the Castle Church in Interlaken since 2014. He received his doctorate in 2016 with his thesis on "Composers of the Nahe region."
